Floor, table and others types of horizontal boring mills

There are two basic types of horizontal boring mills, namely floor-type and table-type. The two differ in their applications, features and usage as follows:
1. In a table-type machine, the job is set up on the machine table, and is usually moveable. This is because the work then can be easily brought to the machine.
2. The reverse is the case for floor-type units. The job is fastened down onto the floor plates; the spindle travels to the piece in this type of machine.
3. The table-type is more geared up towards machine accuracy and versatility of metal removal process.
Other types comprise planer-type that resembles the table-type, albeit with a reciprocating table the piece happens to move past the tool on a bed in the same way as in a planer. It is mostly put to use for long work or where rigidity is essential.

Multiple-head is probably the only type of the horizontal boring mill, which can perform horizontal as well as vertical milling or boring, which is useful for working on V-type engine blocks.

On the other hand, precision boring machines are primarily designed and employed to bore holes in small but critical machine parts. It is performed with a single-point tool at high cutting speeds for producing accurate and finished hole sizes.
