Simpler lathe to high performance CNC: wonder of technology

Lathe machines were originally devised to machine metals. Owing to their inherent versatility, they were gradually employed in a wide array of applications and materials.

In machining jargon, simply called lathes, they are also indicated by more specific subtype names, such as turret lathe, toolroom lathe, etc. These rigid machine tools are used for removing material from a rotating job via the typically linear movements of various cutting tools like drill bits and tool bits.

CNC lathes are fast replacing the older type production lathes (multispindle, etc.) owing to their ease of setting as well as operation. They are designed to make use of modern carbide tooling and also employ modern processes. The part may be designed by the Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) process; the resulting file gets uploaded to the machine.

CNC machine is electronically controlled via a computer menu type interface. The program may be modified, displayed along with a constant simulated view of the process. Once set and tested the machine will continue to turn out parts under minimal supervision of an operator, which is what makes them convenient and efficient.

The design of CNC lathe has considerably evolved over a period of time. Importantly, they have become affordable thanks to free operating systems like Linux and open source CNC software apart from cheaper computers.
