- Accuracy within “Tenths”
- Substantial Reduction in Production Time
- Less Scrap Parts

Quantum Leaps...
In Productivity and Set-up Time Reduction
This Engineering Technologies customer manufactures electric locomotives and had a large 36” diameter motor housing that required two large bored holes to be located in line with one another and held to a tight tolerance. The customers challenge was the necessity of using a boring spindle with less than 30” of stroke that required set-up and repositioning the part after each bore to insure alignment accuracy.
As a solution, the Engineering Technologies 6” Horizontal Boring Mill with a standard boring stroke of one meter, or 39.4 inches, was implemented to produce the part. With this mill, both bored locating holes could be machined in a single set-up, saving hours of production time.
Besides set-up reduction, the accuracy and rigidity of the Engineering Technologies boring spindle allowed substantial metal removal rates and accuracy within “tenths” when fully extended to one meter. This added significantly to production efficiency and the accuracy assured less scrap parts. Overall, the Engineering Technologies solution resulted in a substantial reduction in production time and has been producing quality parts since 1999.
