Quantum Leaps...
In Accuracy and Measuring (In One Step)


Standard Aero produces and repairs turbine blades. They needed a means to precisely machine the blade tips because their accuracy is critical to turbine engine functionality and longevity. Besides machining the blade tips precisely, the customer also required a method of checking their accuracy and establishing traceability.

Engineering Technologies provided a V40 turning center that has a standard table runout of less than 0.0004” for 40” diameter table. This is accomplished using extremely accurate Timken cross rolled bearings for the table which are standard on all Engineering Technologies turning centers. A special grinding head and dressing station were also incorporated and the precision grinding of the blade tips was accomplished.

To address the accuracy check and traceability issue, Engineering Technologies procured special inspection probes and had custom software written for the turbine blade inspection.

Ultimately, the turbine blades were able to be machined within tolerance and inspected on the machine, eliminating expensive inspection fixtures and saving days of set-up time.
